A Class 12 JEE student is doing four jobs at once. The Class 12 syllabus has to be learnt, and it is at least as heavy as Class 11. Class 11 has to be revised, because it forms a large part of the JEE paper and fades quickly if left alone. The board exam needs its own practice in written answers. And JEE Main comes twice: session 1 in January and session 2 in April in recent cycles, with JEE Advanced after that for those who qualify.
Students go wrong in Class 12 by doing these one after another. They study only Class 12 until December, then panic about Class 11, then realise the boards are three weeks away. The plan below runs them side by side, with the balance shifting through the year.

The year in one table
The dates assume Class 12 teaching begins in April and that the board exams fall in February and March, as they have for CBSE and the Maharashtra board in recent years. Exam dates move a little every year, so check the official schedules.

How to split the week in each phase
The balance between Class 12, Class 11 and the boards changes through the year. As a rough guide for self-study time outside class:

These percentages are a guide from our teaching experience, and your teachers may adjust them for you. The point they make is that Class 11 revision never drops to zero before the boards. A student who does no Class 11 work from April to November will spend December relearning it.
Registrations and paperwork to watch
Missing a form deadline is the most avoidable way to lose an attempt. Put these on the family calendar.
- JEE Main session 1 registration: in recent cycles NTA opened it in October or November. Watch jeemain.nta.nic.in and register early, with a correct photograph, signature and category certificate.
- Board exam forms and practical dates: set by your school and board.
- JEE Main session 2 registration: in recent cycles the window opened around the time of the session 1 results. The bulletin explains how candidates already registered for session 1 apply.
- MHT‑CET and other exams: each has its own form and window. Our post on exams to take alongside JEE lists the common ones.
- JEE Advanced registration: after JEE Main results, for those who qualify, on jeeadv.ac.in.
Confirm every date in the official bulletin for your year. Timelines shift, and the only reliable source is the exam body's own notice.
Board marks still matter
For admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs and other institutes through JoSAA, the eligibility rule in recent years has been at least 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates), or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board. A strong JEE rank does not help if this is not met. MHT‑CET admissions also look at Class 12 marks. The board months are part of the JEE plan.
When the plan slips
Every Class 12 plan slips somewhere. An illness in August, a tough chapter that takes three weeks instead of two, school events. When it happens, do not try to catch up by cutting Class 11 revision or sleep. Cut the lowest-value work instead: a second problem book, extra sheets on a chapter you already do well in. Then push the schedule back by the week you lost and look at what that does to November. It is almost always recoverable if you act within a fortnight.

Common questions
Should I skip JEE Main session 1 to focus on boards?
No. Session 1 is a real attempt, and in recent cycles the better of the two session scores has been used. Many students also do better in session 2 because session 1 shows them where they lose marks.
When should the Class 12 syllabus be finished?
By October if possible, and by mid-November at the latest. That leaves time for revision and full mocks before session 1.
How many hours should a Class 12 JEE student study?
That depends on the time spent in class. More useful than a fixed number is that every day includes new work, some revision and some timed problem-solving, and that sleep stays at about seven hours.
