NEET UG exam pattern and marking scheme, explained for the coming cycle

Summary: In the 2026 bulletin, NEET UG had 180 compulsory multiple-choice questions (45 Physics, 45 Chemistry, 90 Biology) for 720 marks in 180 minutes, with +4 for a correct answer, minus 1 for a wrong one and 0 for a question left blank. The government has told the Supreme Court that a computer-based format for 2027 is under consideration, so check the 2027 bulletin when NTA releases it.

The paper at a glance

NEET UG went back to its older, simpler structure in 2025, and the 2026 bulletin kept it. From 2021 to 2024 each subject had an optional Section B where you chose 10 questions out of 15, which made the paper 200 questions long with 200 minutes. That choice no longer exists. Every question now counts and every question must be faced.

Biology is usually split into 45 Botany and 45 Zoology questions in the printed booklet. All questions are single-correct multiple choice with four options. The paper is offered in English, Hindi and a number of regional languages, including Marathi; the full list is in the bulletin.

How the marking works

• Correct answer: +4
• Incorrect answer: minus 1
• Unanswered or marked for review without an answer: 0

The ratio matters more than the numbers. One wrong answer wipes out a quarter of a correct one. Five careless mistakes on questions you knew cost you 25 marks: the 20 you should have earned and 5 more as penalty. At the top end of NEET, where thousands of students sit within a few marks of each other, that difference moves a rank a long way. If NTA drops a question after the final answer key, or accepts more than one option, the bulletin explains how marks are given for it. Read that clause once so you are not surprised on result day.

Mode and timing

Until now NEET has been a pen-and-paper exam. You mark answers on an OMR sheet with the ballpoint pen given at the centre, and once a bubble is darkened it cannot be changed. That single fact shapes how you should practise: mock tests should be done on printed OMR sheets, and the habit of marking only when you are sure should be built months in advance.

A note about 2026. The original exam of 3 May 2026 was cancelled after a paper-leak investigation, and a re-exam was held on 21 June 2026. NTA gave 3 hours 15 minutes for the re-exam to cover extra verification and signing formalities in the hall. For planning purposes, prepare for a 180-minute paper and read your admit card for the exact timing.

What may change for 2027

After the 2026 leak, the Union Education Minister said NEET would move to a computer-based test, and in September 2026 the government told the Supreme Court that the shift for 2027 is under active consideration. As of this writing there is no final bulletin for 2027.

If the exam does move online, a few things are likely to differ from the OMR format, and some will not:

• You would select and change answers on screen until you submit, which removes the "bubble is final" problem.
• If the exam runs over several shifts, as JEE Main does, scores would probably need normalisation across shifts. NTA would explain the method in its bulletin.
• Practising on a computer screen, including reading long statement-based Biology questions without a printed page, would become part of mock-test preparation.
• The syllabus is set by the National Medical Commission and has no connection to the mode of the exam. Your chapters do not change because of the format.

Nothing in your Class 11 and 12 study plan depends on whether the exam is on paper or on screen. The format affects only the last few months of mock practice, so do not let the news distract you from chapters.

Qualifying for counselling

NEET results are given as marks, percentile and All India Rank. To be eligible for counselling, a candidate must reach a qualifying percentile. As of the last cycle this was the 50th percentile for General and EWS candidates, the 40th percentile for SC, ST and OBC candidates, and the 45th percentile for General PwBD candidates. The marks that correspond to these percentiles change every year with the paper and the number of candidates.

Qualifying is a low bar. A government MBBS seat needs a rank far above it, and the rank you need depends on your category, your state quota and the college. Counselling for the 15% All India Quota is run by the Medical Counselling Committee; Maharashtra's state quota seats are handled by the State CET Cell.

How ties are broken

In the 2026 bulletin, when two candidates have the same total, NTA ranks them in this order:

1. Higher marks in Biology (Botany and Zoology together)
2. Higher marks in Chemistry
3. Higher marks in Physics
4. Fewer incorrect answers across the whole paper
5. Fewer incorrect answers in Biology, then Chemistry, then Physics
6. If still tied, a computerised random process supervised by an independent expert committee

Two things follow from this list. Biology marks carry extra weight even beyond their 360, and wild guessing that adds wrong answers can push you below someone on the same score.
