How competitive is each path?
Both paths are demanding, though in different ways.
- NEET: in recent years more than 20 lakh students have registered, for about 1.2 lakh MBBS seats in the whole country, and government seats are only a fraction of that, so a government MBBS seat needs a very high score.
- JEE: over 12 lakh students take JEE Main. The IITs have about 18,000 seats, the NITs, IIITs and other central institutes many more, and state and private engineering colleges more still, so there is a wider range of good outcomes below the very top.
Seat numbers alone should not decide the stream. A student who loves Biology and struggles with Maths will not be helped by choosing PCM because it has more seats.
Five ways to decide
- Look at marks and at interest. Notice which subject your child studies without being told to. A student can keep up two years of 11-hour days only in subjects they like.
- Look closely at Maths. JEE Maths is a big step up from Class 10, so if Class 10 Maths already feels like a struggle, think carefully before choosing PCM. Likewise, a child who finds Biology to be nothing but memorising should think hard before taking PCB.
- Think beyond the entrance exam to the course. Five and a half years of MBBS followed by PG is a long commitment, while engineering careers branch out in many directions. Ask your child what kind of work they picture themselves doing at 30.
- Keep your own hopes separate from your child's. We meet many students who chose a stream because a parent or relative is a doctor or engineer. Talk about this openly at home.
- Try the subjects before you decide. A few months of proper classes in Class 10 soon show which subject clicks.
What about PCMB?
Some students take all four subjects to keep both options open. It can be done, but the workload is heavy, and at some point in Class 11 most students have to put one entrance exam first. Availability differs between institutes, so if you are considering PCMB, discuss it with the counsellor there.
Where MHT‑CET fits
MHT‑CET has both a PCM and a PCB group and leads to engineering, pharmacy and agriculture colleges in Maharashtra. Its syllabus overlaps heavily with JEE and NEET, so a student preparing for either is preparing for CET at the same time.

Our free Foundation course for this year's Class 10 students covers Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology, taught by IITian and doctor faculty. Apart from helping with board marks, a few months of these classes usually make the PCM or PCB choice much clearer for the student and the parents. Common questions
Can a PCB student go for engineering later?
Most engineering programmes require Maths in Class 12, which makes a later switch difficult, although some fields such as biotechnology accept PCB for certain courses. This is why the Class 10 decision needs care.
Can a PCM student do pharmacy or B.Sc?
Yes. Pharmacy (B.Pharm) accepts PCM or PCB in Maharashtra, and B.Sc options are open to PCM students.
What if my child is unsure even after Class 10?
Many children are. Talk to the teachers who have taught your child, compare their Maths and Biology test results, and ask for a counselling session before admission.
