Engineering admission in Maharashtra through CAP, step by step

Summary: Check eligibility, fill the CAP application and upload documents, get them verified, check the provisional merit list and raise grievances if needed, then fill a carefully ordered option form before each round. After an allotment, accept or freeze as the rules require, pay the seat acceptance fee, and report to the college within the deadline.

CAP is conducted by the State CET Cell through a separate portal each year (for 2026‑27 it was fe2026.mahacet.org for first-year engineering). The steps are the same every year, but dates, fees and some rules change, so keep the current year's information brochure open while you follow this guide. Everything below is from the 2026‑27 brochure.

Step 1: Check eligibility

For a Maharashtra State candidate seeking first-year B.E./B.Tech, the 2026‑27 rules require:

• Indian citizenship.
• Class 12 passed with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, plus one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Computer Science, Information Technology and a few other listed subjects.
• At least 45% in those subjects taken together (40% for reserved categories, EWS and persons with disability from Maharashtra). The percentage is rounded to the nearest whole number, so 44.50% counts as 45%, while 44.49% counts as 44%.
• A non-zero score in PCM MHT‑CET, having appeared in all subjects.

For All India seats, a JEE Main score is preferred over MHT‑CET.

Step 2: Know your candidature type

Maharashtra State candidates are classified as Type A to E. Most students in Maharashtra schools are Type A: SSC and HSC passed from a recognised institution in Maharashtra, and either domiciled in or born in Maharashtra. Type B covers students who passed from outside but whose parent is domiciled in Maharashtra. Types C and D relate to parents in government employment, and Type E to the Maharashtra-Karnataka border area. Your type decides which documents you need and which seats you can compete for, so settle it before you start the form.

Step 3: Fill the CAP application and upload documents

The CAP application is separate from the CET application. Students who wrote MHT‑CET did not have to pay an application fee for engineering CAP in 2026‑27; those applying only on the basis of JEE Main did. You upload scanned originals of every document supporting your claims (the brochure asks for .jpg or .gif at a minimum of 150 dpi, up to 1 MB each). Our documents checklist lists them by category.

This is the step where most avoidable problems begin. A caste validity certificate or non-creamy layer certificate that is not ready by the deadline can mean being considered in the general category. Start collecting documents in Class 12, not after the result.

Step 4: Document verification

Documents are verified at a facilitation centre or through whatever method the CET Cell notifies for the year; the 2026‑27 rules also provide for online self-scrutiny of uploaded documents at the seat acceptance stage. After confirmation, you cannot change the information in the form, so read it slowly before you confirm.

Step 5: Merit list and grievances

A provisional merit list is published first. If something is wrong, such as your category, marks or home university, you raise a grievance within the notified window. After that the final merit list is published, and no new documents are accepted to support claims.

Step 6: The option form

Before each round, the CET Cell publishes the seat matrix and you fill an online option form. The 2026‑27 brochure allows between 1 and 300 options, each an institute-course code, in order of preference. The first block is your highest priority.

How to build it:

1. List every college-branch pair you would join, using the previous year's cut-offs published on the CAP website as a rough guide. Look at the cut-off for your category and seat type (Home University or Other than Home University), rather than only the open state-level figure.
2. Sort by genuine preference, not by cut-off. The allotment software goes down your list and gives you the highest option available at your merit. Putting a "safe" option higher does not improve your chances of a better one.
3. Be careful with the top of the list. A seat in your first preference in Round I, top three in Round II or top six in Round III is frozen automatically, and you must take it.
4. Include enough realistic options near the bottom. A short list can leave you with no allotment in a round.

A worked illustration: a student prefers Computer Engineering at College X, then Electronics and Telecommunication at College X, then Computer Engineering at College Y. The form should list them in exactly that order. If College X's Computer seat is beyond reach this year, the software moves on without penalty.

Step 7: Allotment and your decision

There is no betterment after Round IV. The seat you hold at that point is final.

Step 8: Report to the college

The final step is reporting to the allotted institute within the schedule with your original documents. The college verifies them, uploads your admission to the system, and gives you a system-generated receipt. Keep it.

After CAP

Seats that stay vacant after CAP, and institutional quota seats, are filled by colleges at their own level under rules in the brochure. The 2026‑27 rules allow up to 20% institutional quota in unaided private institutes. These admissions still go by merit, but they are handled by the college.
