MHT‑CET Maths: speed methods that are safe to use

Maths is half the PCM total in MHT‑CET, and it gives you about 108 seconds a question.

Summary: The safe speed methods are the ones that use the options: substituting special values, checking a limiting case, eliminating by sign or range, and remembering a small set of standard results. They work because CET is multiple choice with one correct option. Memorised "tricks" without understanding fail the moment the question is framed slightly differently.

In the 2026 pattern, Maths has 50 questions of 2 marks each, a separate 90-minute window, and no negative marking. That gives an average of 108 seconds per question. Many questions need 40 seconds; a few need four minutes. The students who score high are not faster at algebra. They recognise which questions can be answered without full algebra and save their time for the ones that cannot.

A rule we give every student before they start using any method below: speed methods are for checking and choosing, not for replacing understanding. If you cannot solve a question type the long way, a shortcut for it will not survive the exam.

1. Substitute a special value

When a question asks for an expression that must hold for all values of a variable, any convenient value must satisfy the correct option. Pick a value that makes the arithmetic trivial, and test the options.

Example. If ∫ (x ex) dx = f(x) + C, which option is f(x)? Options: (a) x ex (b) (x − 1) ex (c) (x + 1) ex (d) x2 ex / 2.
Differentiate each option instead of integrating. The derivative of (x − 1) ex is ex + (x − 1) ex = x ex. Option (b). About 20 seconds, and no integration by parts needed.

The same idea works for identities in trigonometry (put θ = 0, 30°, 45° or 90°), for sums of series (put n = 1 and n = 2), and for "the value of k for which" questions.

Where it goes wrong: choose a value that is allowed. Putting θ = 90° in an expression with tan θ is not allowed. And if two options give the same value at your chosen point, test a second value before you choose.

2. Check a limiting or special case

For geometry and coordinate questions, look at the extreme case the formula must survive. A formula for the distance between two parallel lines must give zero when the lines coincide. A formula for the area of a triangle must give zero when the three points are collinear. An answer for probability must lie between 0 and 1.

This method rarely picks the answer outright, but it often removes two options in five seconds. With four options and no negative marking, getting down to two and then solving is a fast and safe routine.

3. Eliminate by sign, range or type

Before calculating, read the options. Many CET questions contain options that are impossible on sight:

  • An inverse sine value outside [−π/2, π/2].
  • A negative answer for a variance, a length or an area.
  • A determinant or matrix product with the wrong order.
  • A probability greater than 1.
  • An answer to a definite integral of a positive function over a positive interval that is negative.

Train yourself to glance at the options first for every Maths question. It costs two seconds and saves a lot of wasted work.

4. Use results you have proved once

Some results come up so often that re-deriving them in the exam is a waste. Know them with their conditions, which you should have derived once while studying. A short list that serves CET well:

AreaResult worth rememberingCondition to remember with it
Definite integrals∫0a f(x) dx = ∫0a f(a − x) dx, and the "add the two forms" trickWorks cleanly when f(x) + f(a − x) is simple
Pair of straight linesFor ax2 + 2hxy + by2 = 0, the lines are perpendicular if a + b = 0Only for the homogeneous equation through the origin
Matrices|kA| = kn|A| and |adj A| = |A|n−1n is the order of the square matrix
Binomial distributionMean np, variance npqVariance is always less than the mean, a quick check
Line and planeDistance of a point from a planePlane must be in the form ax + by + cz + d = 0

The binomial row gives a useful elimination too: if a question says a binomial distribution has mean 4 and variance 5, there is no such distribution, because npq < np whenever q < 1.

5. Mathematical Logic in seconds

Mathematical Logic is a State Board Class 12 chapter that JEE students often skip. Its questions are among the quickest marks in the paper once the basic truth tables and equivalences are automatic: the negation of p → q is p ∧ ~q, and p → q is equivalent to its contrapositive ~q → ~p. Twenty minutes of practice a day for a week is usually enough to make this chapter a 30-second chapter.

Shortcuts we ask students not to use

Not every popular trick is safe. The ones that cause the most trouble in our students' mocks:

  • Memorised answer patterns ("in CET, the answer to this type is usually the second option"). The paper is set fresh every shift, and there is no reliable pattern to exploit.
  • Formula cards for every chapter learnt without derivation. They fail when a question changes one condition, such as an ellipse with its major axis along y instead of x.
  • Approximating too early in calculation-heavy questions. If the options are close together, rounding at the second step picks the wrong one.
  • Special values that make two options equal. As above, always test a second value if there is a tie.

A four-week practice routine

WeekDaily practice (about 75 minutes)Goal
125 questions from one Class 12 chapter, untimed, applying option-first reading to every questionHabit of reading options before solving
225 mixed questions in 40 minutes; mark which ones you solved by elimination or substitutionRecognising shortcut-friendly questions
350 questions in 90 minutes (a full Maths section)Pace of about 108 seconds on average, with no blanks
4Full PCM mock every other day; Maths error log on the days betweenStable score across mocks

Keep a small notebook of every question you got wrong because of a shortcut. Most students find the same two or three mistakes repeating, and fixing those is worth more than learning new tricks.

Our chapter notes for Maths include solved MCQs for each NCERT chapter, and the Integrals and Probability notes are good places to practise option-first reading.

Common questions

How much time should I spend per Maths question in MHT‑CET?

The average is 108 seconds, since the 2026 pattern gives 90 minutes for 50 questions. In practice, aim to finish easy questions in under a minute so you can spend three or four minutes on the few that need it.

Should I guess in MHT‑CET Maths?

Yes, on any question you cannot finish. There is no negative marking, so a guess can only add marks. Eliminate what you can first to improve the odds.

Are Vedic Maths tricks useful for CET?

Quick mental arithmetic helps a little, but the time in CET Maths is lost in choosing a method, not in multiplying numbers. Option elimination and substitution save far more time.
