Summary: Build concepts for JEE Main and the State Board syllabus side by side through Class 11 and most of Class 12. Fill the State Board-only topics as you meet them. Switch to CET-specific speed practice in the final weeks, and consciously drop the JEE habit of skipping questions, because MHT‑CET has no negative marking.A Maharashtra student who wants engineering usually needs both exams. JEE Main is the route to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, and the qualifier for JEE Advanced. MHT‑CET is compulsory for Maharashtra State candidates seeking B.E./B.Tech admission through the state's centralised admission process, as the 2026 CET brochure states. For All India seats in Maharashtra colleges, a JEE Main score is preferred over CET. So a student who writes only one of them is closing doors for no gain.
The overlap is large, but it is not complete, and the two papers are won in different ways.

The CET syllabus document itself says the difficulty in Physics, Chemistry and Maths will be at par with JEE Main. In practice, a student comfortable with JEE Main-level questions finds most CET questions shorter. The CET challenge is doing 150 of them in the time given without careless errors.
The topics that need separate attention
Because MHT‑CET follows the State Board syllabus, a JEE student working mainly from NCERT-based material will meet a few topics that JEE Main does not ask, and some chapters that sit in a different year. In Maths, Mathematical Logic and Pair of Straight Lines are chapters in the Maharashtra Class 12 book. In Chemistry, the State Board Class 12 book still has Solid State, Introduction to Polymer Chemistry, and Green Chemistry and Nanochemistry. In Physics, the Class 12 State Board book includes Rotational Dynamics, Kinetic Theory of Gases and Radiation, Oscillations and Superposition of Waves, which NCERT places in Class 11. The concepts are the same, but the State Board book's framing and question style differ.

A Class 12 calendar for both
In recent cycles JEE Main has been held in January and April, and in 2026 MHT‑CET PCM had a first attempt from 11 to 20 April and a second from 12 to 20 May. Dates change every year, so treat the calendar below as a shape, not a schedule.

Switching habits before CET
This is where good JEE students lose CET marks. For two years they have been told that a wrong answer costs a mark, so they skip anything uncertain. In MHT‑CET, a skipped question is a guaranteed zero and a guess has a one in four chance of scoring. A student who skips six Maths questions out of habit is giving away an expected 3 marks (6 × ¼ × 2) for nothing.
The second habit to unlearn is over-solving. JEE questions often need a full derivation. Many CET questions can be answered by checking dimensions, testing a special value, or eliminating options. A useful routine for the last two or three weeks is one full CET mock every day at the same time as your actual shift, followed by an hour of analysis. Our post on CET mocks and time management covers how to run them.
If JEE Main goes badly
It happens every year, and it is the reason CET preparation cannot be an afterthought. A student whose January session disappoints still has April for JEE and the CET window after that. Students who have kept up State Board exercises all year are able to turn their attention to CET in a week. Students who ignored the State Board book until April have to learn new topics in a panic, and it shows in their percentile.
The reverse is also true. A strong CET result does not reduce the value of JEE Main, because many top options outside Maharashtra run only through JoSAA. Keep both alive until the results are in.

Common questions
Is JEE Main preparation enough for MHT‑CET?
It covers most of the concepts, but not all of the State Board topics, and it trains habits (skipping, long solutions) that hurt in CET. Add State Board exercises through the year and CET-pattern mocks at the end.
Do Maharashtra students need MHT‑CET if they have a JEE Main score?
For Maharashtra State candidature seats in B.E./B.Tech through CAP, the 2026 brochure makes MHT‑CET mandatory. JEE Main scores are preferred for All India candidature seats.
When should I start CET-specific mocks?
Occasional CET mocks from December keep the speed habit alive. Daily mocks make most sense in the final two to three weeks before your CET date.
